In Your Needs, Trust Him

This caught my attention: sow, reap and store away—all which required time, attention, effort and labor. Toils one must do to eat to be nourished and to survive.

Birds need not to do such. When they wake up every morning, they have to search for food for themselves. In one sense, they too had to labor and yet had to depend on what kind of food our Heavenly Father would provide.. even the where, when and how.. and at the end of the day, they are fed with what (and everything else) God decides to give them.

Food is one of the many things we worry about. Neither capricious nor ridiculous but a need, a basic at that.

May we, who are of utmost value before our Heavenly Father, who gave His one and only son Jesus to die for our greatest need which is to be saved from our sins and to be reconciled back to Himself, take comfort and rest in full confidence that He knows all our needs and in His love, justice, wisdom, power and faithfulness would graciously and aboundingly provide it according to His will and according to His ways.

Trust in Him who knows all things.

Solus Christus.

KNOWING, BRETHREN BELOVED, YOUR ELECTION OF GOD. – 1 Thessalonians 1:4

Many persons want to know their election before they look to Christ, but they cannot learn it thus; it is only to be discovered by  “looking unto Jesus” (Heb. 12:2). If you desire to be sure of your own election, assure your heart before God by asking the following questions: Do you feel yourself to be lost, guilty sinner? Then go immediately to the cross of Christ and tell Jesus so. Tell Him that you have read in the Bible,, “Him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out” (John 6:37).Tell Him that He has said, “This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” (1 Tim. 1:15). Look to Jesus and believe on Him, and you be confident of your election directly, for as surely as you  believe, you are elect. If you will give yourself wholly up to Christ and trust Him, then, you are one of God’s chosen ones; but if you stop and say, “I want to know first whether I am elect,” you do not know what your are asking. Go to Jesus; although you are ever so guilty, go just as you are. Leave all curious inquiry about election alone. Go straight to Christ and hide in His wounds , and you will know your election. The assurance of the Holy spirit will be given to you, so that you will be able to say, “I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him” (2 Tim 1:12). Christ was at the everlasting council. He can tell you whether you were chosen or not but you cannot find it out in any other way. Go and put your trust in Him, and His answer will be, “I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee” (Jer. 31:3). There will be no doubt about His having chosen you, when you have chosen Him.

Sons we are through God’s election, who in Jesus Christ believe.

Our Patient Father God

I was staring at our “babies” a few days ago when this truth was instilled in my heart: the great patience of our Father God.

My sister and I got these plants a few weeks back and had to learn how to take care of them (I didn’t want any plants initially since I’ve always thought I would end up neglecting and killing them 😅).

Anyways, after a few days of attending to their needs like watering them, exposing them to indirect sunlight if able to, and even talking to them, I was getting impatient and restless, seeing that there was no change in any of them. No new leaf, no buds, nothing.

Then the epiphany: the great patience of our God. We don’t really think about it but if we looked at His point of view towards us, we would really appreciate His patience with our growth in Him. All the things He would allow in our lives, the joy and sorrow, success and failure, gains and loses and even the times we would either please Him or disappoint Him, He would use that for our growth towards Christlikeness. And He wasn’t restless or impatient or anxious whenever we stumble or take a wrong turn. He patiently waits for us to realize our mistakes (realization that comes with humility and humbleness as the Holy spirit convicts us) and lovingly expects a new leaf in our lives to spring forth, knowing in all His infinite wisdom and sovereignty that He faithfully works out all things for the good of those who loves Him and are called according to His purpose. Waste and delays are in existing in His vocabulary, meaning He doesn’t waste anything and there is no delay in His timeline since He makes things beautiful in His perfect timing.

So I encourage you, my friends, when we fall into sin or into waywardness, don’t lose hope. Instead let us come boldly to His throne of grace and humble ourselves before this patient Father who takes delight patiently in the growth of all His creations. Hope in Jesus! Hope in the finished work of Christ at calvary!

Christ: self denial and dying to one’s self

Self denial and dying to one’s self..

I thought I had a different understanding of what self denial and dying to one self means..

To be like Christ, to die to one self is to accept the lordship of Father God in one’s life and to place an immense urgency to honor and obey whatever His will is without any regards to self and other people.. no ifs, no buts..

Dying to onself is to be like..

Samuel who was the faithful priest who did all according to what is in the heart and mind of God (1 Samuel 2:35)..

David who was regarded to be the man after God’s own heart because he did all of God’s will (Acts 13:22)..

And

Jesus whose food was to do the will of God and to finish His work (John 4:34)..

So I urge you brethren, when we pray, let’s take heart and mean (with a humbled, accepting heart of submission) what the Lord’s prayer said:

Matthew 6:9-10 NKJV
In this manner, therefore, pray:
Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.

Unhindered, unopinionated
Absolutely good and infinitely wise will of our sovereign God

Psalm 115:3 NKJV
But our God is in heaven
He does whatever He pleases.

I pray that the LORD God Almighty bestow upon you the grace to desire to receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. Here’s a prayer for you.

Talents and Stewardship. Cilia and Stirrup.

This morning, I was lingering on thoughts about the church being as a body and have always loved how the apostle Paul did the comparison a few times in his epistles. The church, with Christ being the head, is one body composed of many, many parts. I remembered the time that I was literally imagining the church having major parts like the heart, liver, skin, bones, spinal cord, and there’s the seemingly minor parts like the hair, eyelashes, nails and even the cilia which are the tiny hairs inside our noses. Thinking further, I told myself, then there must also be parts we cannot see with the naked eye like the capillaries, red blood cells, lymphocytes and the like. All these parts playing a function, a responsibility in the body that it belonged to.

Society today values the magnitude of the position and roles we play, especially when there’s a hierarchy present. We equate a higher position or a higher responsibility to a greater importance and put it on an unnecessary pedestal. Conversely, we associate trivial responsibilities with insignificance, resulting to much discouragement and neglect.

As I said earlier, the church is one body and all its parts has its distinctive roles. It doesn’t matter if you are the stirrup (the smallest bone in the ear) or the earlobe or the toenail or the femur. All have a role to play and one part is need of the other. What do you think happens if the stirrup malfunctions? Our hearing gets affected, right?  Then it irritates us as we are unable to converse properly when our sense of hearing fails us. When our nails get severely damaged, it restrains not only our affected finger but the whole hand as its movement become limited due to pain and inflammation. One small cut on the sole of the feet can cause the body to go haywire like in septic shock if this cut is not treated properly. If one part suffers, the whole body suffers with it.

As Paul particularly mentioned all these truths in 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 (which I didn’t have a clue on until today, by the way), one part cannot say because I am not an eye, I am not part of the body. One part cannot say to the other that I have no need of you. The body is considered one unit, with all parts caring for one another and working together by focusing on the roles they were given, no comparison or envy.

Hence, it should be the same in the church. You may think that your role maybe irrelevant because you are not a pastor. Maybe you are discouraged because you only have the gift of tongues. Take heart! God, in His infinite wisdom and gracious love, has bestowed to you roles and gifts as He pleased; gifts, talents, positions, roles and responsibilities which we should be good stewards of as a sign of gratitude.

Remember the parable of talents (Matthew 25:14-30)? The master was greatly pleased when the other two servants became good stewards of the talents they were given by doubling it according to the amount they were given. What if the third servant did the same thing, that instead of hiding that one single talent, he also doubled it? Most probably, the master would have been pleased with him as well. As with the first two servants, the master said the same thing, “Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.” It wasn’t a matter of who made more. The master didn’t require the servant given with two talents to produce five more like the first one. It was a matter of being faithful with what they were given.

We cannot all be preachers. We cannot all be worship leaders. We cannot all have the same gifts. Similar yes, but not all same. Some might be called to higher calling, but we all have place in this body. Some need to be the knee, the teeth, the uvula or the stirrup but all parts are essential and indispensable.

So if you are the stirrup or a cilia in this body of Christ, I encourage you, shine! Shine your brightest! Be the best stirrup you could ever be! Be the best cilia you could ever be! For your one most important Audience, watching from above, is greatly pleased as you shine your brightest in the part He has given you with.

Be Still! Rejoice! He is God!

Yesterday, I was taken aback by a post in facebook. On the post was one of our church’s original songs entitled, “Purihin Pangalan Niya” (personal translation: Praise His Name) and who originally composed it. What surprised me was that it was composed by the youth of Hope Tacloban in Philippines as a thanksgiving song after these youth and their families where transferred to their new houses whilst Typhoon Yolanda was wreaking dire havoc. The song is well loved as its lyrics and tempo will bring about singing and dancing full of joy and praises to God.

Such a timely reminder, as today Strait Times reported 7 new cases of the 2019 nCOV infection here in Singapore. Some cases are near home which whispered much fear in my heart. At the same time, the words, “Be still and know that I am God.” lingered in my mind. Looking for more comfort, I read through the whole chapter of Psalm 46:

“God is our refuge and strength,
A^[a] very present help in trouble.
² Therefore we will not fear,
Even though the earth be removed,
And though the mountains be carried into the ^[b]midst of the sea;
³ Though its waters roar and be troubled,
Though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah

⁴ There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God,
The holy place of the ^[c]tabernacle of the Most High.
⁵ God is in the midst of her, she shall not be ^[d]moved;
God shall help her, just ^[e]at the break of dawn.
⁶ The nations raged, the kingdoms were moved;
He uttered His voice, the earth melted.

⁷ The Lord of hosts is with us;
The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah

⁸ Come, behold the works of the Lord,
Who has made desolations in the earth.
⁹ He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two;
He burns the chariot in the fire.

¹⁰ Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!

What an encouragement from the LORD! He is our refuge and strength! He is always present and He will help in any trouble whether it was earthquakes, crumbling mountains or roaring oceans. He gives us an assurance that He is always with His children. He is powerful and sovereign above it all even when nations are in chaos and kingdoms crumble. Desolation and wars aren’t something He is unconscious of, but rather, in His wisdom and judgement, His works. He is Jehovah Sabaoth, Lord of Hosts and He is with us! What do we need to do? Do we fear? Do we panic? Do we give in to defeat? No! We need to be still and know that He is God! Our God, the Lord of the Heavenly Armies! Again, we need to be still and know He is God! The God who doesn’t change! Whose faithfulness and mercies cover a thousand generations!

Somehow, I understood how those youth from Tacloban were able to compose such a wonderful song of praise amidst much lost and sorrow. The typhoon may have taken their homes, but the LORD God have provided new homes for them. From the provision God rendered to them comes a quiet confidence that He was with them during the storm, their very present help in that trouble, thereby yielding a song full of rejoicing!  Truly, His name is worthy of highest praises!

So instead of being discouraged of this rising number of 2019 n-COV infection, I pray that we stand firm, not letting fear seize our hearts. Instead, we hold our ground and continue to believe that our LORD God is the God Almighty above all things! No matter how this outbreak unfolds, God is God! Break out into singing all you children of the Jehovah Sabaoth! Be still! Rejoice! He is God! He is exalted among the nations! He is exalted in the earth! Be still! Rejoice!

Thoughts and Prayers on Wuhan

Just recently, fear has come across the world with regards to the outbreak from the 2019 novel coronavirus or commonly known as the “Wuhan virus”. News, videos of stories, even rumours about this incident are all over the internet. Masks are flying off the shelves despite the higher than usual prices.

Don’t get me wrong. The moment we had a suspected case in our ward, wherein I was currently finishing my shift, gave me both chills (as the suspected patient was only a few meters away from me) and relief (as just finish work and was about to go home). This patient was tested negative by the way.

But in all these things, I know and believe that our Almighty God is sovereign. He is above all things even above this seemingly catastrophe that has struck the world on the beginning of this new decade we are all looking forward to.

Frankly I am more concerned of the misleading public information that had created unnecessary fear and worry. Panic is a very dangerous thing wherein we act out of impulse and not out of wisdom. My uttermost prayer is that God will not only protect us from the virus itself but will generously bestow wisdom unto His children in choosing what to believe in and how to vigilantly act on it.

Bear in mind and in heart that if God was sovereign over the fall of man, if He was sovereign over the reign of kings, if He was sovereign over rise and fall of civilizations, if He was sovereign over wars, tsunamis, hurricanes, floods, births and deaths, well.. surely, surely, He is sovereign over this Wuhan pandemic. All these things don’t change the fact that HE IS GOD, THE GREAT I AM whom we can trust and depend on as HE would faithfully never leave us nor forsake us.i

I remembered one wise pastor said “God shakes the heavens and nations with natural disasters and turmoil for the fulfilment of His divine plan and agenda.”

His thoughts are not our thoughts, His ways are not our ways. We may not know what His agenda is, but we know who God is and hopefully believe in His supremacy in all the universe.

I’m not saying that we should be laxed about the matter, no! Vigilant personal hygiene, healthy lifestyle and diligent prayer should be in our utmost practice at present. But do not let fear dictate your actions. Let the Holy Spirit within do that. Continue to rest in God’s almighty power and infinite wisdom.

And if ever, we will get infected. If ever, Singapore will have another outbreak like SARS, I pray that we remember His immutable faithfulness. He said in Isaiah 43 that when we pass through the waters, He will be with us. He promised that when we walked through the fire, we will not be burned.

And in any case of  death, I pray that God, in all the abundance of His grace, mercy and love, will give you peace that even in death, He is sovereign and that precious in His sight is the death of His saints. (Psalm 116:15)

Coincidentally (Again, emphasis on I don’t believe in coincidences), our Hope Conference theme this year is “We Have Won”. Yes! WE HAVE WON. WE HAVE WON. WE HAVE WON IN CHRIST JESUS! I pray that these words resonate to every believer’s hearts, minds and spirits. Let’s press on to the victory we have in Christ Jesus! I’ll say it again,

We have won in Christ Jesus!

Romans 8:28 (Part 2)

²⁸ And we know that all things work together

for good to those who love God,

to those who are the called

according to His purpose.

 

Let’s get back to the rest of this wonderful promise!

for good.

Now here, most people have many misconceptions. When we think of our good, we think of our benefit, our convenience. But most of us don’t even have a slightest clue on what is good or if it will turn out to be for our good. It’s like when I buy clothing. I usually buy something because it looks nice on display and I think it would look nice on me. I put it on and test it in inside the fitting room and sees that my decision to buy it is correct. When I wear it to an event, that’s when I would unfortunately realize that it is too fitted or too big or have a too deep neckline or the straps are falling off my shoulders or even the fabric is too sheer which is a big disaster. It’s like when I buy heels that make my legs look slimmer and sexier and ended up arguing with the same heels and throwing them out because of the many many blisters it gave my feet all the time I wear them (true story btw).

The truth is we don’t know what is good for us. We are completely ignorant of what will give us the greatest benefit. We desire for a lot of things thinking they will be good for us. We think that we know better when in both sides of reality, only God does as He is omniscient. The only way we can be assured that what we choose will be for our good is only if it is in line with His will. Not something pleasing to the eyes, not something other people said is good, but because it is His will.

Then what if I mistakenly or intentionally go against His will? We, the children of God, the eternally secured in Christ. In these times when we become wayward, He, as omnipotent and sovereign as He is, is still able to change and fix things up, not His will, but all things around it, including us, so that we will realize that we are going the wrong way. He will let us undergo a very very painful learning process, which we can actually avoid, until we surrender and say “Thy will be done” because He knows it will be for our good. In time, when mature in our walk with Him, He will enable us not to live our lives according to our will but according to His.

to those who love God.

Well this promise is for everyone who loves God and entrusted their lives solely unto Him through faith in the salvation and lordship of Christ Jesus. We cannot simply say that we love God and go on with our lives.

The Bible says in Matthew 22:37-38 says, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment.” Loving God demands our everything: our heart, our soul and our mind. He is to be our greatest treasure, cherished and delighted into, desired above everything else. (See the article: A Treasure Found). 

This will only be possible once we received Jesus in our lives as our Lord and Savior (here is how). The reason behind it is it is impossible to treat God as your most treasured possession as humans. Humans, because of our sins, cannot come before a Holy God. In ourselves alone, our eyes are veiled and blinded from the beauty of His grace and love in Christ Jesus. We maybe able to see and know God the Father but it will extremely difficult to obey Him and surrender unto Him if we rely only our own. We all are sinful by our innate nature, selfish and foolish beings in rebellion who think highly only of ourselves and want to take control of our own lives and would never relinquish it to anyone else.

But once we repent of our sins and receive Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we become born again and a new creation. We will have Christ living in us through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.  Now with Jesus living in us and convicting us through the Holy Spirit, we will be able to really treasure God for who He is whom is above everything else just like Jesus did. We will desire for God and a deeper intimacy for Him. We will  be able to keep His commandments because we love Him through us abiding in Christ.

to those who are the called according to His purpose.

Lastly, we, the beloved children of God, are here on earth not just to enjoy the blessings of the abundant life He bestows upon us but we are the called according to His purpose. His purpose is not according to our terms and condition but His terms which is for us to be  transformed from glory to glory and become Christ-like. We are to be changed and conformed to the image of Christ. Why is that?

Christ as we all know is God-incarnate, the image of God. He is the greatest manifestation and revelation of God’s love for the world. As John 3:16 says: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” God willingly gave Jesus up for the undeserving world to save us from our sins because of His love. Jesus willingly died as His obedience to the Father. As a result, we who received Him will have eternal life. Jesus is the glory of the grace of God.

When we are transformed to the likeness of Christ, we will be  able to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. God’s love will have a physical vessel in this cruel world, us loving other people thorough Christ. Just as Jesus laid down His life  for us, in Christ, we are enabled to selflessly and lovingly lay down our lives for all sorts of people all over the world. We can be a poured out wine and broken bread with joy as we grasp God’s purpose for our Christ-likeness reveals His heart: His glorious outrageous love for people and the world.

 

I pray that whenever we are reminded of this marvelous promise God has for us we will really use it to convict us and direct us on the great truth it contains. May we be able to believe in our hearts that:

 ^“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28 (NKJV)
